Between the Lies | Book Review

This Young Adult fiction caught my attention from the use of text messages on the back cover and after reading just the first few pages I was hooked. This is a fast-paced story which covers themes of social media, bullying, school life and family relationships making it a really current, captivating book.

The story is based in Glasgow and focuses on the viewpoint of a 'nobody' Abbie Knox when her 14 year old classmate disappears. The story is packed full of twists and right up to the last few pages I wasn't sure what was going to happen next. There was moments of suspense, creepiness, emotion, frustration and shock. I felt like the book never really slowed down making it one of those books you just don't want to stop reading, however late it's getting.

Although Between the Lies, published by Kelpies in 2017, is a teen thriller novel it's definitely one that would be enjoyed by older readers. The story combines the use of text messages, newspaper reports and social media messages along with simple narration from the central characters' point of view.  I feel like this made the story more realistic, more relatable and more dynamic.

With comments comparing it to Gone Girl it's definitely a thriller that you can sink your teeth into and experience goosebumps reading. I'd highly recommend this thought provoking book and I'm hopeful that there might be a sequel on the horizon.
