Bubba Gump Shrimp London Review

After going to Bubba Gump Shrimp in New York we knew we had to try the first British Bubba Gump Shrimp out when we visited London in February. The seafood restaurant chain  inspired by the 1994 film Forrest Gump is world famous and the London restaurant has only been open for a matter of months. On Coventry Street it's located right in amongst the attractions of Leicester Square. Easy to get to and always busy!

Without being able to book a table we went to the restaurant at 5.30pm and asked for a table for 2 and were told we'd have a 30minute wait. Not too bad for a Friday night , but with no bar down stairs to wait at we had to leave and come back. Not a massive issue but I'd have been quite happy ordering a cocktail. If you've only got a 10minute wait you can always have a look about their gift shop which is packed full of Bubba Gump/Forrest Gump gifts.

When we arrived back at the restaurant, and squeezed past the huge queue we let the staff know we were there and were called to go upstairs quite quickly after. We couldn't believe the size of the restaurant upstairs. It was like a maze! We followed the waiter to our table, and we were quite happy to be seated in a booth surrounded by the Forrest Gump memorabilia.

We were quite surprised to be put to a table, given the menus then left alone with no instruction. Perhaps it's because American's approach to customer service in restaurants is very different. We were expecting to be told about the Run Forrest Run and Stop Forrest Stop sign system in which you can stop the waiting staff by flipping the sign. Thankfully for us we knew how it worked because we ended up needing it!

The menus are exactly the same as the one in America. There's the table tennis paddle menu for drinks and a big old menu full of food choices. With appetisers, mains, gluten free options, a kids menu and desserts there's quite a lot of information to take in. The waiter quite quickly took our drinks order. I chose a Luisianna Lemonade with Strawberries which was pricey at £9.95 but you get a free glass from the shop downstairs included in that price. Without knowing what beers they had my boyfriend was one of those annoying customers who asks what they've got. The waiter happily sped through the list and a pint was quickly chosen.

My cocktail was delicious... when it finally arrived. We waited for 10minutes expecting either the drinks to arrive or our food order to be taken. Unfortunately no one came near us and we had to flip the sign. One of the managers came to us really quickly, within a minute, so this system definitely works! I ordered the BLT Shrimp salad, which was £11.95, and Mark ordered the Texas Cajun Chicken Sandwich, which was £11.75. Both pretty good prices.

We only had a short wait before our food arrived which was great but we were still waiting for our drinks! The waiter giving us our food was too quick to leave us, we didn't get the chance to ask! Back to the Stop Forrest Stop sign! The waitress that spotted it was again quick but she was also very apologetic. Within minutes she was back at our table with our drinks.

I really enjoyed my salad, though it wasn't that big. My cocktail was huge and without doubt I'd order it again. The Texas Cajun Chicken Sandwich was what I had in New York and it looked just as good in London as it did last October. We thought the dessert menu was disappointing so didn't bother ordering anything and bought a sneaky packet of sweeties in the Sainsbury's on our way home. A bit of a shame as I was feeling stuffed - maybe I should have had a starter! We were a bit surprised that a 10% tip had been added to the bill. I know this is quite a regular occurrence in America or for big groups but  we weren't expecting it here!

As for the atmosphere, if you're a fan of Forrest Gump you'll enjoy seeing all the pictures, decor and movie memorabilia. It's a fun concept just a shame it didn't quite match up to our experience in New York.

Have you been to any of the Bubba Gump Shrimp restaurants around the world?

  1. I honestly had no idea there was an actual Bubba Gump Shrimp restaurant! Let alone one in London! I think I might have to take a special trip from Wales to go to London to try the food! My fiancé and I are obsessed with the movie & we always quote the long list of shrimp dishes that Bubba knew of haha!!!
Sounds a little annoying to not be told what to do with the signs and to have a bit of a long wait for drinks, it's happened to me at a different chain restaurant, but I think they get busy or forget! Nice review! xox
